Today I visited High Tech Elementary school and met my mentor, Natalie Allie, for the first time. We said hello and she brought me to the playground where her fourth grade class was having recess. The kids soon came up to me and asked who I was, and after introducing myself they began to ask me a barrage of questions about myself. After fifteen minutes of interviewing we went inside where all of the kids got to ask me questions for a brief amount of time. Soon after the student teacher began a read aloud where they finished a book they were really into. Proceeding that the kids got into their book clubs and started to read new books within smaller groups. Small tangent: I think the idea of having book clubs in class is such a fantastic idea. It allows kids time to read and discuss a book that they might not read otherwise. Just brilliant. Anyway, I was assigned to assist one group, and they were reading one of my fourth grade favorites: The Witches by Roald Dahl. As we read I encouraged them to look out for vocabulary words that they were unfamiliar with. After book club they went out for recess for twenty minutes. Twenty minutes pass, and they come back into the class. I talk to a group of them while they are settling in. Once class starts they wrote in their writing journals, and some work on a research paper about boats. I assist two kids with grammer and spelling in their papers. Then came lunchtime where I interviewed Mrs. Alli. The interview form is posted with this blog post. We talked about project ideas and Mrs. Alli suggested i make a Go-Fund me video for their skateboarding project, and that I teach the kids how to use photoshop. After lunch the kids cleaned up, and either stayed for their SLC's or went home. Overall today was an amazing expierence and I cannot wait to work with Mrs. Alli and the kids in January.
